STEWARTIA PSEUDOCAMELLIA
Grower Notes:
Stewartia pseudocamellia is commonly referred to as Japanese Stewartia or Deciduous Stewartia. It is a multi-stemmed, pyramidal, deciduous tree that is noteworthy for its flaky, exfoliating gray, red, orange bark in summer. White, cup-shaped, camellia-like flowers appear in July and August and are followed by pointy, brown seed pods. Serrated foliage emerges dark purple in spring, turning dark green in summer before maturing in shades of red, orange and purple.
Japanese Stewartia thrives in partial sun in moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Morning sun in best. Ideal for mixed borders, woodland gardens and as a specimen plant.
